Description The European BESS Market: A New Era of Large-Scale Investment Europe’s battery energy storage sector has entered a decisive new phase of scale and maturity. The total EU battery storage capacity reached 77.3 GWh by the end of 2025, up from just 7.8 GWh in 2021, a tenfold expansion in just four years. Nevertheless, to meet its energy flexibility needs, the EU must scale to around 750 GWh by 2030, requiring yet another tenfold increase from today’s levels. Looking at the latest statistics, Europe is on a good path to rech this goals. In 2025 alone, the EU installed 27.1 GWh of new battery storage capacity, with 55% of all new capacity coming from utility-scale systems, confirming large-scale storage as the main engine of EU market growth. This structural shift signals a fundamental change in who is driving the market: institutional investors, infrastructure funds, and energy majors, not just households. Following this development, a new class of specialist battery storage investors has emerged across Europe — deploying hundreds of megawatts per transaction and building multi-gigawatt platforms. Our team at renewables.digital has identified the largest European BESS investors based on recent deals, their total capacity acquired and their strategic direction. In the following, we present three of the largest BESS investors from Europe. 1) AIP Management (Copenhagen, Denmark) AIP Management is a Copenhagen-based investment manager dedicated to renewable energy and infrastructure assets across Europe and North America, with a team of around 75 professionals and offices in Copenhagen, London, Madrid, and New York. AIP specialises in decarbonisation and energy infrastructure that facilitates the energy transition, with over €8 billion invested in infrastructure assets to date, including renewable energy assets with a combined capacity of approximately 7 GW. Battery storage has become one of AIP’s most active investment areas. In 2025, AIP acquired several stakes in BESS project, like a UK portfolio of three battery energy storage assets with a combined capacity of 700 MW and 2.4 GWh. They also acquired a 50% stake in Coalburn 2, a 500 MW, 2-hour lithium-ion BESS in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. With over 1,200 MW of BESS capacity acquired across these two transactions alone, AIP has rapidly established itself as one of the continent’s most active battery storage investors. 2) Eku Energy (London, United Kingdom) Eku Energy was launched by Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investment Group as a standalone global battery storage platform dedicated to developing, building, and actively managing a portfolio of energy storage assets diversified across markets, revenue, and contracting structures. Headquartered in London, the company is jointly owned by a Macquarie Asset Management-managed fund and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI). Unlike broader infrastructure investors that hold storage alongside wind and solar, Eku focuses exclusively on battery energy storage systems, giving it deep specialist expertise across the full project lifecycle. The company is active in the UK, Australia, Japan and Taiwan, making it one of the few truly global pure-play BESS platforms. In April 2025, Eku made one of the largest portfolio acquisitions in European BESS history, buying Bluestone Energy’s entire UK battery storage pipeline, comprising 1,000 MW/2 GWh of projects at various stages of development. 3) Statera Energy (London, United Kingdom) Statera Energy was founded in 2015 with a vision to become a market leader in grid balancing technologies, filling critical gaps in the UK’s energy system to help fast-track the era of renewables. The company is a fully integrated developer, owner, and operator of flexible energy infrastructure, with a portfolio that spans battery storage, flexible gas generation, pumped hydro, and green hydrogen. So far, the company has £1bn committed investment and an investment pipeline of £7bn until 2030. Statera has 1.5 GW of BESS capacity delivered or in construction, with a further 1.7 GW in consented. Statera’s most significant BESS deal to date was the January 2025 acquisition of the 680 MW/1,360 MWh Carrington Storage project in Greater Manchester from Carlton Power. Located at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park.   Columns included in the list of battery storage investors in Europe Company data (Company Name, Legal form, State of origin) Contact details (Address, City, Postcode, URL, E-Mail, Phone, Management) Area of activity Special Focus (IPP, PPAs, Repowering) Further information (Regional Focus, Founding year, installed capacity in MW) Source: Solar Power Europe Image Sources: Sungrow Emea via Unsplash
