Step 1: Using your motorcycle’s manufacturer manual, specify how much slack your chain requires in mm or inches. Measure the size of your chain and use the table to identify your required Chain Monkey setting. Step 2: Align bottom of domed nut with required setting line and adjust circular stop until it touches the orange base. Step 3: Hook on to chain and tighten until circular stop touches the orange base. Step 4: Tighten chain until all slack is removed while centralising wheel. Step 5: Remove from chain. Required tension will now be set. [slide-anything id=”4700″] How do you check motorcycle chain tension? The Chain Monkey can be used to not only set tension, but also to check it: Hook the Chain Monkey onto the chain. Align the bottom of the domed nut to the required setting line, and adjust the circular stop until it touches the orange base. Undo the Chain Monkey and hook onto the chain, then tighten the centre bolt until the circular stop touches the orange base. If you are unable to tighten the Chain Monkey to this setting, your chain is too tight, and if there is still slack present, your chain is too loose. How tight is a motorcycle chain supposed to be?Tell-tale signs that suggest your chain tension isn’t set correctly include: A ‘wurring’ sound as you accelerate Knocking between gear changes The chain looking under strain when you sit on the bike When should I tighten my motorcycle chain? It is advised you check your chain tension every 2 or 3 times you refuel, or every 500 miles, whichever comes first. How long should a motorcycle chain last?Chains will wear out over time and will inevitably need replacing. How often it requires replacing will depend on the quality of the chain, as well as how it is ridden, the condition of the sprockets and how it has been maintained. How often should a motorcycle chain be replaced?A variety of factors will affect how often you need to replace your chain. A chain can last anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 miles so it depends on the quality of your chain and how often you ride your bike. Why does my chain need to be set to the correct tension?Setting your chain to the correct tension will optimise performance and power delivery, prolong chain and sprocket life and help to provide a smoother ride. How do you align a motorcycle chain? The Laser Monkey is an innovative laser alignment tool designed to provide precise wheel alignment for both chain and belt driven motorcycles, of any make and model.
