I am a big fan of Laura’s picture books (Hare & Ruru, What Colour is the Sky, Moonlight Mission) so this is a treat. The board book is pitched at our youngest picture book fans.I have been musing on how illustrations have personalities, how they sing with the preferences and charisma of the artists to make them unique. With Laura I am drawn to the warm colour palette, the textures that impart life, the facial expressions that evoke presence and feeling. I feel these illustrations as, even at my ripe old age, I search for the hiding animals.This is the perfect gift to tuck into a stocking, to snuggle up with after a long play on the summer beach. It is the kind of book I can imagine reading seven times in a row to an eager child and not tiring of it.
